Burak Gedik’s sustainable startup thrives in Finland

Finland’s supportive and innovative startup environment made it the ideal place for Burak Gedik to launch Benerg, a company turning food waste into renewable energy solutions.

Burak sees a bright future in Finland. He encourages others considering Finland to do their research.

Burak Gedik’s move to Finland was motivated by his wife’s work opportunity in 2023. Originally from Istanbul, they had considered building their careers in various cities. Helsinki’s vibrant startup ecosystem convinced them to stay.

Burak joined Aalto University’s Accelerator Program, where he began refining his business concept. That led to the launch of his startup, Benerg.

“When we first joined the Sampo Accelerator, we began to really understand the ecosystem. It’s one of the best in Europe, Burak says.”

Business Finland played a key role in helping Burak and his co-founders navigate regulations. After extensive research and refining their business,

“The support here is incredible. Finland is a great place to build a business. I didn’t know to attract startup founders with eligible business ideas, and they can get help to relocate, Burak shares.”

Why Finland?

Burak is impressed by Finnish culture, work-life balance, and quality of life.

“In Türkiye, one word can have ten meanings. Here, it's direct and to the point. If a Finn says something, you can trust it, he explains.”

“Here it’s not just about generating money but caring about people and trusting each other. It’s a different mindset.”

Burak believes Finland is an excellent place for networking. Asking a lot of questions, being specific and attending events actively will get you far, he says.

Finns might seem timid, but Burak knows how to overcome it.

“Invite them for a drink and explain yourself over a lonkero or beer! It’s easier to talk honestly, he laughs.”

He also appreciates Finland’s efficient work culture, with flexibility and strong family benefits.

“People leave space for colleagues. There’s a strong focus on meeting deadlines, he says.”

The Results

Helsinki is small compared to Istanbul, but that’s why Burak enjoys life here. Especially spring feels magical.

“We have never experienced this kind of balance. We used to be stuck in traffic. Now, we can focus on more important things, he reflects.”

“Living in Helsinki feels like being in a natural park. You’re just minutes away from forests and lakes. That’s unique.”

Learning Finnish is now a priority for Burak. Embracing the local culture is essential for integration, especially in a small country like Finland.

“People here speak excellent English, but in business, Finnish is still essential, he observes.”

“I’ve started learning because it makes a difference in how I interact with others.”
